New CAFE III norms may not be ambitious enough for India's car market

Business Standard · automobile

New CAFE III norms, effective from 2027-28 to 2031-32, aim to improve vehicle fuel efficiency by approximately 16.7 per cent using super-credits for electric and hybrid vehicles. However, these standards may not be sufficient to significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions as India's car market continues to expand. Projections suggest electric vehicles will only account for 11 per cent of sales by 2032, a modest increase from the current 8 per cent. Concerns also exist that tradable compliance credits could weaken enforcement, potentially undermining the transition to greener transportation.
