A Scottish parliamentary committee has recommended the government reconsider its policy allowing foreign nationals with limited leave to remain to contest elections. This recommendation follows the election of Indian national Q Manivannan, who was on a student visa, as an MSP. The committee noted public surprise and found 77% of respondents disagreed with extending candidacy rights to those on time-limited visas. Despite this, the First Minister stated no intention to review the legislation, while the Scottish Greens defended the rights of such individuals.
