Right to Protest Not Absolute, Cannot Justify Endless Site Occupation: Supreme Court
Times of India · top
The Supreme Court stated on Tuesday that no group can occupy a protest site indefinitely, balancing the right to protest with the right to trade and business. Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasized that protest sites must be identified to avoid hampering the livelihoods of daily wagers and hawkers. The court also directed a traders' association seeking damages to implead protest organizers. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that those calling for protests must bear responsibility for compensating losses caused by agitations.
