India's Lost Mammal: The Cheetah's Extinction Story

Hindustan Times · environment

The cheetah is the only large mammal India has lost since independence, with its history in the subcontinent largely undocumented by bones or photographs. Surviving records include cave paintings, Sanskrit lexicons, Persian chronicles, and Mughal miniatures, detailing how this cat, once widespread, was hunted and captured to extinction. Originally adapted for open country, the Asian cheetah subspecies diverged from African populations tens of thousands of years ago.
