A prolonged dry spell during the monsoon season is projected to cause a significant 30% reduction in paddy yields across South Goa. Agriculture officials have identified rain-fed fields in Salcete as particularly vulnerable to the lack of timely rainfall. The dry conditions have negatively impacted the crucial tillering stage of paddy cultivation, leading to fewer side shoots that would eventually bear grain. Some farmers have also forgone cultivation this season due to insufficient rain, further contributing to the anticipated decline in production.
