Viruses May Trigger Parkinson's Disease Processes: Study

The Hindu · india

Scientists at CSIR-CCMB have discovered how RNA viruses like influenza and COVID-19 might initiate processes linked to Parkinson's disease. Viral RNA can form structures that promote the aggregation of alpha-synuclein, a protein associated with Parkinson's. However, a cellular defense protein, DDX39A, can unwind these viral RNA structures, slowing down harmful protein buildup. While not every infection leads to neurodegeneration, repeated viral infections could increase the risk of accumulating damaging changes over time.
