China Coal Mine Water Could Cool Data Centres

Chinese researchers suggest treated coal mine water could cool the nation's expanding data centres. By 2030, China's data centres may need over 3 billion cubic metres of water annually, while coal mines could generate an estimated 12.96 billion cubic metres. This underutilized resource, generated at roughly two tonnes per tonne of coal mined, offers a potential alternative to freshwater supplies. While underground mine water has stable, low temperatures, treatment is crucial to remove contaminants that could harm cooling equipment. Pilot-scale implementation is the proposed next step.

चीनी शोधकर्ताओं का कहना है कि कोयला खदानों के पानी को साफ करके देश के बढ़ते डेटा सेंटरों को ठंडा किया जा सकता है। 2030 तक, चीन के डेटा सेंटरों को हर साल 3 अरब क्यूबिक मीटर से ज़्यादा पानी चाहिए होगा। वहीं, कोयला खदानों से करीब 12.96 अरब क्यूबिक मीटर पानी मिल सकता है। यह पानी, जो हर टन कोयले पर लगभग दो टन निकलता है, ताज़े पानी का एक अच्छा विकल्प हो सकता है। हालांकि, पानी को साफ करना ज़रूरी है ताकि वह कूलिंग सिस्टम को नुकसान न पहुंचाए।
