Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a 90-minute stage adaptation of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1882 novel Anandamath on Friday in Gujarat’s Ekta Nagar. The National School of Drama production will feature 300 artistes and offers a contemporary interpretation of the novel. Anandamath includes India’s national song, Vande Mataram, which became a rallying cry during the freedom movement. The Union home ministry recently mandated a specific version of Vande Mataram for official occasions, sparking debate.
