UN Closes Somalia Mission After Three Decades of Political Engagement
Al Jazeera · world
The United Nations has officially closed its political mission in Somalia, concluding over three decades of engagement aimed at assisting the nation's post-civil war reconstruction. UNTAMIS ceased operations after completing a two-year transition period, with its duties transferred to Somali institutions and UN agencies. This closure follows a request from Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's government in 2024. Despite the mission's departure, UN humanitarian agencies and AU troops remain, though facing potential funding cuts.
