Elderly Dam Oustees End 50-Day Tower Protest After Minister Meeting Assurance

Two elderly men, aged 72 and 82, have ended their 50-day protest atop a 200-foot electricity tower in Pathankot, Punjab. They climbed down on Monday after the district administration assured them of a meeting with the Water Resources Minister within a week. The protesters, Sharm Singh and Kulwinder Singh, were demanding jobs for their kin or termination of appointed individuals, citing meagre compensation for their land acquired for the Shahpur Kandi Dam. They warned of intensified agitation if their grievances are not addressed.

पंजाब के पठानकोट में 72 और 82 साल के दो बुजुर्ग सोमवार को 200 फुट ऊंचे बिजली के टावर से नीचे उतर आए। उन्होंने एक हफ़्ते के अंदर जल संसाधन मंत्री से मुलाक़ात का आश्वासन मिलने के बाद अपना 50 दिन का धरना खत्म किया। प्रदर्शनकारी, शर्म सिंह और कुलविंदर सिंह, शाहपुर कंडी बांध के लिए अपनी ज़मीन के बदले मामूली मुआवज़े का हवाला देते हुए अपने रिश्तेदारों के लिए नौकरी या नियुक्त लोगों की बर्खास्तगी की मांग कर रहे थे। उन्होंने चेतावनी दी कि अगर उनकी शिकायतों का समाधान नहीं हुआ तो वे आंदोलन तेज करेंगे।
