Supreme Court to Hear UPI Payment Charge Case

The Supreme Court will hear a case today regarding the imposition of MDR charges on UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000. This new system, set to be implemented, has been challenged in court. The petition argues that the 0.4% MDR on person-to-merchant payments lacks legal backing, transparency, and public consultation. However, the charges will be borne by merchants, not customers. Person-to-person transfers and person-to-merchant payments below ₹2,000 will remain free.
