Floating 'Scarecrow' and Kite Significantly Cut Seabird Bycatch in Fishing Nets

A two-year trial off England's coast has demonstrated that simple floating devices can drastically reduce seabird entanglement in fishing nets. A "Looming Eye Buoy," a floating device with moving eyes, decreased auk bycatch by 59%. A bird-shaped kite, known as the scarybird kite, proved even more effective, cutting bycatch by 71%. Researchers worked with 10 fishermen, monitoring over 1,000 nets. These findings suggest that inexpensive deterrents can protect seabirds without requiring major modifications to fishing gear, offering a promising solution for marine conservation.
