Chief Election Commissioner Removal Similar To Supreme Court Judge, ECI Tells Court

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has filed a joint affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) can only be removed from office in the same manner as a Supreme Court judge. The nearly 250-page document asserts that any attempt to restrain the CEC's functioning would be contrary to the law. The ECI also dismissed media reports about internal frictions and alleged authoritarian functioning of the CEC as unsubstantiated. Petitioners challenging the CEC's functioning include opposition leaders.
