Maharashtra Village Worships Ravana Instead Of Burning Him

News18 Hindi · india

In a unique 300-year-old tradition, the village of Sangola in Maharashtra's Akola district celebrates Vijayadashami by worshipping Ravana instead of burning his effigy. Villagers believe Ravana possessed both virtues and vices, and they choose to honour his good qualities. A stone idol of Ravana, depicted with ten heads and weapons, is installed at the village entrance. The tradition began when the idol could not be moved further from its original location during transport. Priests perform daily prayers, and locals participate in a 'maha aarti' on Dussehra.
