Despite the S&P 500 index trading near its record closing high, a significant majority of its components are performing poorly. As of October 13, 2026, 84% of the S&P 500's 503 stocks were at least 10% below their individual record highs. This weakness is particularly pronounced in sectors like consumer staples, consumer discretionary, utilities, materials, and real estate, where over 90% of stocks are trading below their peaks.
