A six-year-old girl alerted neighbours to the alleged abuse of her three-year-old brother, who was reportedly beaten and burned with cigarettes by his stepfather. Residents of Tarun Nagar, Lodhipara, complained to Civil Lines police, leading to the registration of an FIR. The boy sustained serious injuries, including cigarette burns, and is now recovering under child-protection care. Police arrested the 35-year-old stepfather and the 40-year-old mother, who allegedly supported the violence and attempted to conceal the incident. Intoxication is suspected to be a factor in the assault.
