A 15-year experiment in Kenya has revealed the critical role elephants play in maintaining savanna ecosystems. Researchers found that excluding elephants from experimental plots led to a 67% drop in dung beetle numbers, a 51% decrease in their biomass, and a 23% decline in species richness. Dung beetles are vital for soil health, nutrient cycling, and seed dispersal. The study highlights how the presence of large mammals like elephants directly supports insect communities, underscoring the interconnectedness of savanna life.
