King Cobras Navigate Thailand's Farms, Relying on Forest Fragments and Canals
Times of India · environment
A study in Thailand's Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve reveals king cobras move less in agricultural areas, relying instead on forest fragments and vegetation along canals. Researchers tracked seven cobras between 2014 and 2018, observing their reduced movement in farmed zones like rice, corn, and sugar cane fields. These snakes utilized vegetated areas, often near field margins or irrigation canals, as crucial routes through fragmented habitats. While roads and villages pose threats, the cobras continued using available habitat patches nearby.
