Sheep Horns and Tortoise Shells Inspire New Impact-Resistant Car Materials

Times of India · science

Researchers are exploring natural structures like sheep horns and tortoise shells to develop safer, lighter vehicle components. A composite made from sheep horn and polymer resin shows promise as a sustainable alternative to carbon fibre, boasting an impact strength of around 276 kJ/m², exceeding conventional carbon-fibre composites. A patent has been filed for this material, and it's being supported by the AICTE's Lab to Market programme to potentially replace ABS plastic in car bumpers. Further development is needed to assess its commercial viability.
