India Probes Pernod, Diageo Over Scotch Import Tariffs Under UK Trade Pact
Business Standard · business
Indian tax officials are investigating liquor giants Pernod Ricard and Diageo for allegedly misclassifying bulk Scotch imports to gain lower tariffs under the recent India-UK trade pact. Tax inspectors visited Pernod's India headquarters and conducted searches at Diageo's offices as part of an industry-wide exercise. The probe focuses on whether duty relief applies to bulk concentrates, not finished products. The UK-India trade pact, effective July 15, reduced import taxes on certain Scotch imports from 150% to 75%. Both companies stated they are cooperating with authorities.
