Onion inflation surged from 22.54% in July to 48.27% in August, according to Consumer Price Index data. The all-India average retail price reached Rs 53.92 per kg on September 15, a 48% increase from the previous month. Unseasonal rains damaged crops in Maharashtra, while a delayed monsoon impacted the next planting season, creating a supply gap. Significant storage losses, estimated at 30-40%, further exacerbate the shortage, leading to higher wholesale and retail prices for consumers.
