Australia Turns Waste Plastic Into 50-Year Lasting Railway Sleepers
Times of India - India · india
Australia began experimenting with railway sleepers made from recycled plastic in 2015, transforming waste into a durable railway component. Developed by Integrated Recycling and Monash University, the Duratrack sleeper uses approximately 85% post-consumer plastic waste, including difficult-to-recycle materials. After extensive laboratory research and trials, these sleepers were installed in Melbourne's metropolitan network in 2019. Approved for low-speed applications, they possess a potential lifespan of up to 50 years, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional materials.
