Business Standard · business
Bangladesh has formed a six-member wage board to review garment workers' pay, urging them to return to work following violent protests demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 taka. Workers cite rising costs of living, while the government seeks to quell disruptions in the vital garment industry, which employs four million people and accounts for over 80% of export earnings. Despite the announcement, thousands continued demonstrations, leading to factory closures and police intervention with tear gas and water cannons. Prolonged unrest could impact export shipments and payments from international buyers.
