Kerala Mumps Outbreak Renews Calls For MMR Vaccine Inclusion

The Hindu · india

Kerala is experiencing a persistent mumps outbreak that began in late 2023 and continues into 2026, leading to renewed demands for the mumps-measles-rubella (MMR) vaccine to be included in the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP). Studies have highlighted immunity gaps in children and potential long-term disabilities from complications. Mumps infections surged significantly in 2024, with over 74,000 cases reported, and continue to be high in 2025 and 2026. Despite being vaccine-preventable, mumps has been a low priority due to low mortality, with the UIP currently providing only the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine.
