Maharashtra Sugar Mills Begin Crushing Amid Farmers' Protest

Only 15 out of 55 sugar mills in Maharashtra have commenced crushing for the 2026-27 season due to ongoing farmers' protests. While 40 mills have performed the customary puja, they have not started full operations. In Karnataka, no mills have begun crushing, with only eight operating on special season cane. Farmers in both states are demanding a higher cane support price and an increased minimum selling price for sugar. A government committee has been formed to address grievances, but farmers have rejected this and continue their agitation.
