Global Wildlife Populations Decline 73% Since 1970, India Shows Hope

Times of India · environment

A WWF Living Planet Report reveals a stark 73% decline in monitored wildlife populations globally between 1970 and 2022. Freshwater ecosystems saw the steepest drop at 85%. However, India is highlighted as a country making significant strides in wildlife recovery, successfully reversing population declines for species like tigers and rhinos. Despite nine mammal species being critically endangered and many bird and amphibian populations declining, India's efforts demonstrate that targeted conservation interventions can yield positive results with political will and community involvement.
