MP Questions Weather Crop Insurance After Poor Payouts To Areca Growers

Shivamogga MP B.Y. Raghavendra has questioned the necessity of the weather-based crop insurance scheme, citing meagre payouts to areca growers in his district. Over 1.18 lakh growers registered, covering 53,848 acres, with total premiums nearing ₹174 crore. However, compensation paid was only ₹143 crore, less than the premium collected. Raghavendra alleged the scheme benefits insurance companies and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, not farmers. He suggested the state government should provide direct relief instead of collecting premiums and announced farmers would protest.

शिवमोग्गा के सांसद बी. वाई. राघवेंद्र ने मौसम आधारित फसल बीमा योजना की ज़रूरत पर सवाल उठाए हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि उनके ज़िले में सुपारी उगाने वाले किसानों को बहुत कम भुगतान मिला है। 1.18 लाख से ज़्यादा किसानों ने रजिस्ट्रेशन कराया था, जिसमें 53,848 एकड़ ज़मीन शामिल थी। कुल प्रीमियम लगभग 174 करोड़ रुपये था। लेकिन, जो मुआवज़ा मिला वह सिर्फ़ 143 करोड़ रुपये था, जो जमा किए गए प्रीमियम से भी कम है। राघवेंद्र ने आरोप लगाया कि इस योजना से बीमा कंपनियों और कर्नाटक राज्य प्राकृतिक आपदा निगरानी केंद्र को फ़ायदा हो रहा है, किसानों को नहीं।
