Indianapolis Dam Removal Ends 127 Years of River Disruption
Times of India · environment
Indianapolis has begun removing the Emrichsville Dam from the White River, a structure built in 1899 that altered over four miles of the waterway. The project aims to improve aquatic habitats and make the river safer for people by restoring natural flow and fish passage. The dam, originally intended for boating, had acted as a barrier to aquatic wildlife, including fish and freshwater mussels, impacting their reproductive cycles. Funding for the removal comes from the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and The Nature Conservancy.
