The Kerala High Court has expressed dissatisfaction with the Motor Vehicles department's infrequent use of powers to revoke driving licences, particularly in drunk driving cases. Justice Kauser Edappagath directed the Transport Commissioner to ensure prompt action against intoxicated drivers causing accidents. The court emphasized that licensing authorities can revoke or disqualify licences independently, without waiting for a criminal court conviction. This observation came while deciding a bail application for a petitioner accused of drunk driving, where the licensing authority had not yet acted against the driver.
