Indians applying for US visas now face an average wait of 346 days for an interview in 2025, a significant increase from just 42 days before COVID-19. This eight-fold jump is attributed to a shortage of consular staff and a surge in applications. GAO reported that while visitor visa applications increased, the number of officers handling non-immigrant visas decreased due to hiring and retention issues. This backlog particularly affects Indian applicants, with wait times longer than in China and Brazil.

भारतीयों को अब 2025 में अमेरिकी वीज़ा के लिए इंटरव्यू का इंतज़ार औसतन 346 दिन करना पड़ेगा। यह COVID-19 से पहले सिर्फ 42 दिन था। यह आठ गुना बढ़ोतरी कंसुलर स्टाफ की कमी और आवेदनों की बाढ़ के कारण हुई है। GAO ने बताया कि विज़िटर वीज़ा के आवेदन तो बढ़े, लेकिन नॉन-इमिग्रेंट वीज़ा संभालने वाले अधिकारियों की संख्या भर्ती और कर्मचारियों को बनाए रखने की समस्याओं के चलते घट गई। इस बैकलॉग का खास असर भारतीय आवेदकों पर पड़ रहा है, जिनके लिए इंतज़ार का समय चीन और ब्राज़ील से भी ज़्यादा है।
