Between August 1 and October 21, 2026, 53 Bornean orangutans were rescued from forest fires in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. These fires not only kill the animals but also destroy their homes and food sources, making rescue operations challenging. Over 48,000 hectares of forest have burned in the province this year, with Ketapang district severely affected. Rescued orangutans often arrive malnourished and injured, requiring intensive veterinary care and rehabilitation. Conservationists now face the difficult task of finding new, safe forest habitats for the displaced animals as their original homes are destroyed.
