Crews in Grand Rapids, Michigan, have begun a project to restore the rapids that gave the city its name, which disappeared due to industrial development. The first phase involves removing four low-head dams in the downtown section of the Grand River and replacing them with natural rock features. This restoration aims to reshape the river for fish and wildlife while enhancing public access and use. The initial phase is expected to take approximately two years, with completion targeted for October 2027. Mussels, including threatened species, were relocated before construction began.
