Assam CM Announces Over 560 Arrests in Child Marriage Crackdown

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that 564 individuals have been arrested and 481 cases registered in a recent crackdown against alleged child marriages. Sarma stated the operation will continue until the practice is eradicated from the state. He previously reported over 12,000 cases and 11,000 arrests in a campaign over the past few years, claiming an 81% decline in child marriages in 20 districts. The Chief Minister aims to make Assam completely free of the practice by 2026.
