A study by IIT-Madras reveals that highly educated professionals, including IT experts and doctors, are frequent victims of financial cybercrime. Contrary to popular belief, high digital literacy does not guarantee protection from fraud. Victims were often targeted during stressful life events, with fraudsters exploiting emotions to induce a state of impaired judgment. Financial losses varied widely, and victims experienced significant emotional distress and damaged trust. The study calls for improved institutional responses and victim support systems.
