The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to create a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the participation of elephants in temple events and religious functions. The SOP must strictly adhere to animal welfare and safety standards. A Joint Working Group, including wildlife and veterinary experts, will draft the procedure, which will cover health checks, microchip verification, and transportation protocols. It will also set safety thresholds for noise levels and crowd proximity, and ensure handler qualifications.

मद्रास हाईकोर्ट ने तमिलनाडु सरकार को मंदिर आयोजनों और धार्मिक समारोहों में हाथियों की भागीदारी के लिए एक स्टैंडर्ड ऑपरेटिंग प्रोसीजर (SOP) बनाने का निर्देश दिया है। एसओपी में पशु कल्याण और सुरक्षा मानकों का सख्ती से पालन किया जाना चाहिए। वन्यजीव और पशु चिकित्सा विशेषज्ञों सहित एक संयुक्त कार्य समूह (Joint Working Group) इस प्रक्रिया का मसौदा तैयार करेगा, जिसमें स्वास्थ्य जांच, माइक्रोचिप सत्यापन और परिवहन प्रोटोकॉल शामिल होंगे। यह शोर के स्तर और भीड़ की निकटता के लिए सुरक्षा सीमाएं भी तय करेगा, और हैंडलर की योग्यता सुनिश्चित करेगा।
