Pakistan's Solar Boom Sees Panels Included in Wedding Dowries Amidst High Costs

Business Standard · business

Pakistan is experiencing a significant solar power boom, driven by high electricity costs and an unreliable grid, with solar panels now even being included in wedding dowries. Cheap Chinese solar panels have fueled this shift, with exports to Pakistan increasing dramatically. Solar now accounts for over 14% of Pakistan's power supply, up from 4% in 2021. Approximately a quarter of Pakistani households were using solar panels by April 2026, with farmers also adopting solar pumps. This transition has helped Pakistan avoid billions in fuel imports.
