Florida Researchers Develop DNA Test For Four Invasive Snakes

Hindustan Times · science

In 2024, University of Florida researchers developed a pioneering DNA test capable of detecting four invasive snake species, including Burmese pythons, in environmental samples. The tetraplex digital PCR assay can identify the genetic material of Burmese pythons, northern African pythons, boa constrictors, and rainbow boas from water and soil. Early tests successfully detected Burmese python DNA in water within minutes and in soil samples even weeks after the snake's removal.
