Antarctic Glacier Cliffs Retreat Rapidly But Stabilise, Study Finds
Times of India - India · india
A new study tracking Antarctica's ice cliffs reveals that glaciers can retreat faster than previously modelled without triggering catastrophic, self-sustaining collapse. Researchers from MIT and WHOI analysed 15,330 satellite observations of ice cliffs between 2019 and 2023. While some tall cliffs did retreat rapidly, they often stabilised rather than collapsing further inland. The findings suggest that factors beyond cliff height, such as water depth and accumulated ice, influence glacier stability. This research could help refine projections of future sea-level rise.
