Rare Shamonda Virus Detected in Human for First Time in France

Mint · health

France has reported the first-ever human case of the Shamonda virus, detected in a severely immunocompromised patient who died in October. The virus, which typically affects livestock and is transmitted by biting insects, was previously circulating in animals in eastern France. Health authorities stated there is no public health risk, considering this an exceptional case. While the virus has been present in Africa and Asia for decades, this marks its initial detection in humans. Investigations are ongoing to confirm the link between the virus and the patient's neurological complications.
