China's Loess Plateau Vegetation Growth Intensified Groundwater Drought
Times of India · environment
China's extensive vegetation restoration program on the Loess Plateau, initiated in 1999, has inadvertently worsened groundwater drought. Between 2003 and 2015, rapid vegetation expansion was found to be more strongly linked to declining groundwater storage than weather patterns. Researchers utilized satellite data from GRACE and GLDAS to monitor changes in terrestrial water storage and assess drought severity. This study highlights a complex environmental trade-off where ecological restoration efforts can strain limited water resources in arid regions. The findings underscore the need for careful water management in future restoration projects.
