The Supreme Court of India has affirmed that the right to association and peaceful protest is a fundamental right. This statement came in response to concerns raised by senior lawyers about the extensive barricading and "shutting down" of Delhi ahead of planned protests. The court acknowledged the need to balance the rights of protestors with the rights of ordinary citizens. It asked lawyers to verify if protestors had submitted necessary details and sought permission from the police, indicating that disproportionate measures would be examined.
