UNAMA reported that at least 52 women and one girl were arrested or detained in Herat and Kabul between July and September 2026. These detentions were for alleged violations of dress codes, such as not wearing a chador, having visible hair, or wearing colourful scarves. Some were also detained for appearing in public without a male guardian. UNAMA expressed grave concern, stating these detentions violate women's rights and expose them to social stigma. The arrested women were reportedly released after several hours.
