Scientists Warn of Increased Risk of Major Earthquakes in Himalayas
Aaj Tak · science
Following a powerful 7-magnitude earthquake in Tibet and subsequent aftershocks, scientists are assessing the risk of major seismic activity in the Himalayas. Dr. Naresh Kumar from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology explained that continuous collision between Indian and Asian tectonic plates builds up immense pressure and energy underground. This stored energy can be released over decades, leading to significant earthquakes. The recent seismic events in Tibet and tremors in Uttarakhand raise concerns about the potential for a larger quake in the vulnerable Himalayan region.
