Five people were found dead from gunshot wounds in a suspected murder-suicide at a Mundelein residence. The victims included four family members, with authorities believing the perpetrator had a romantic relationship with one of the deceased. The bodies were discovered after a daughter, calling from California, requested a welfare check on her parents, retired veterinarians Rebecca and James Schmidt, and their son Bryan. Two firearms were found at the scene, along with a vehicle parked at a funeral home. The incident has deeply affected the typically low-crime suburban community.
