Bengaluru's Hesaraghatta Grassland Becomes 5,678-Acre Conservation Reserve
The Better India · lifestyle
After nearly two decades of advocacy, the Karnataka government has officially designated 5,678 acres of Hesaraghatta grassland as the Greater Hesaraghatta Grassland Conservation Reserve. This area, often perceived as empty land on Bengaluru's outskirts, is a vital ecosystem supporting over 285 bird species, amphibians, and butterflies. It also plays a crucial role in the Arkavathy River and Thippagondanahalli Reservoir catchments, contributing to Bengaluru's water system. The reserve's notification recognizes its ecological, faunal, floral, and geomorphological importance, providing legal protection to this functioning grassland-wetland system.
