Great Indian Bustard Rewilding Faces Setback With Bird Predation

Mongabay India · environment

India has released four captive-bred Great Indian Bustards into the wild in Rajasthan as part of a rewilding effort. However, one of the birds was predated by a desert fox within days of its release. Authorities acknowledge that post-release survival rates are expected to be low, with estimates around 30%, and that predation and infrastructure pose significant threats. Despite this early loss, officials maintain the rewilding program is on track, citing the inherent challenges of introducing birds back into their natural habitat.
