HC Commutes Death Sentence For Rape, Murder

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has commuted the death sentence of a migrant labourer to 30 years in jail for the rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl in Fatehabad, Haryana. The court also acquitted a co-accused, who was awarded the death penalty, giving him the benefit of doubt. The bench noted that while the offence was ghastly, it did not qualify as "rarest of the rare" for capital punishment.

पंजाब और हरियाणा हाई कोर्ट ने फतेहाबाद, हरियाणा में 5 साल की बच्ची से रेप और हत्या के मामले में एक प्रवासी मजदूर की मौत की सज़ा को बदलकर 30 साल की जेल कर दी है। कोर्ट ने एक सह-आरोपी को भी बरी कर दिया, जिसे मौत की सज़ा सुनाई गई थी, उसे संदेह का लाभ देते हुए। बेंच ने कहा कि अपराध भयानक था, लेकिन मौत की सज़ा के लिए "दुर्लभ से दुर्लभतम" की श्रेणी में नहीं आता।
