North Korea is now sending married women over 40 years old to China for work in clothing and seafood factories. Previously, younger, unmarried women were sent for such assignments. Many of these women leave their children behind in North Korea, leading to distress and attempts to return home. The government reportedly believes that the fear of repercussions for their families might deter women from escaping their assignments. Workers typically stay for three to five years, with passports often held by officials, making voluntary return difficult.
