Karnataka Seeks Expedited Wildlife Clearance For Mekedatu Drinking Water Project

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has urged the Union government to expedite wildlife clearance for the Mekedatu drinking water project. He clarified that the current request is only for permission to drill 20 boreholes for geotechnical investigations within the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, not to divert protected forest land. The state submitted the proposal on July 1, seeking essential data for the proposed balancing reservoir. The Centre has requested details on pending Supreme Court petitions related to the project, which Karnataka will provide.

कर्नाटक के मुख्यमंत्री डी के शिवकुमार ने केंद्र सरकार से मेकेदातु पीने के पानी परियोजना के लिए वन्यजीव मंजूरी में तेजी लाने का आग्रह किया है। उन्होंने स्पष्ट किया कि वर्तमान अनुरोध केवल कावेरी वन्यजीव अभयारण्य के भीतर भू-तकनीकी जांच के लिए 20 बोरहोल ड्रिल करने की अनुमति के लिए है, न कि संरक्षित वन भूमि को मोड़ने के लिए। राज्य ने प्रस्तावित संतुलन जलाशय के लिए आवश्यक डेटा की मांग करते हुए 1 जुलाई को प्रस्ताव प्रस्तुत किया था। केंद्र ने परियोजना से संबंधित लंबित सुप्रीम कोर्ट की याचिकाओं पर विवरण मांगा है, जिसे कर्नाटक प्रदान करेगा।
