The court stated that an adult's choice to live with their partner cannot be controlled by parents. Sonika's parents had accused Akbar of abduction and wrongful confinement, leading to his arrest and Sonika's return to her parents. She expressed joy at regaining her freedom, comparing the ordeal to a war she has won.

सोनिका चौहान करीब एक साल बाद अपने पति अकबर खान के पास लौट आई हैं। इलाहाबाद हाई कोर्ट के फैसले के बाद यह संभव हुआ। कोर्ट ने कहा कि बालिग अपनी मर्जी से किसी के साथ रह सकता है, माता-पिता इसे रोक नहीं सकते। सोनिका के माता-पिता ने अकबर पर अपहरण और गलत तरीके से बंधक बनाने का आरोप लगाया था, जिसके बाद अकबर को गिरफ्तार किया गया था और सोनिका अपने घर चली गई थी।
